Inspiring Alumni :Benoît Anicet, a Bachelor in New York

From a Bachelor’s degree at TBS to the management of an American branch of the Armani Group, Benoît Anicet has pursued a career on the international stage for over 20 years. Born in Pau (south-west France), he arrived at TBS after a year in law school where he had felt a lack of support. He chose Manchester as his destination for his second year and set his sights on Marketing and International Business. This founding experience gave him a taste for international life that has stayed with him ever since, as he explains: “Looking beyond the academic quality of the programmes, which are very comprehensive, I learned during my Bachelor’s degree to adapt to all sorts of situations and to be open to the world”.

From export activities to the founding of a subsidiary

Benoît lost no time in putting this approach into practice. Immediately after graduating, he headed to Barcelona to pursue a Master’s degree at TBS. This marked the start of a 10-year stay in the city, where he worked first in consultancy and then in the export departments of several companies. He then joined Nanimarquina, a family business specialising in contemporary carpet design. Tasked with developing the US market from Barcelona, Benoît opened a subsidiary in New York and settled there himself in 2011. During this time the United States became the company’s biggest market, accounting for 50% of turnover.

Benoît spent 15 years in all with Nanimarquina, until a new opportunity gave his career a further lift: in September 2019, he became Vice-President of Armani/Casa for the Americas, overseeing a team of 14 people. “This division of the Armani Group is dedicated to the home and interior design: furniture, lighting, tableware and so on. We are also developing a new design and furnishing arm for property development projects.
This job has given me access to the luxury sector, which was of huge interest to me. And as a large group, they can offer me all sorts of career opportunities for the future.”

Soft skills and networking: the keys to success

When we asked Benoît how his career could inspire today’s students, his advice was simple:
“Bachelor students gain the technical knowledge to choose what they want to do. My advice first and foremost would be to try out new things, placing the emphasis on two points in particular: soft skills, through their work experience, and networking, which is the key to their plans and their future success. At TBS, they have the opportunity to draw upon a strong network that will be of great benefit to them in the future, from both a professional and a personal standpoint”.
